Woodward pays tribute to officers

The families of police officers killed and injured in dissident republican attacks were among those honoured at a special event last night.

Secretary of State Shaun Woodward paid tribute to the police service at a reception at Hillsborough Castle, jointly hosted by Chief Constable Matt Baggott, which included serving and former police officers and their relatives.

Guests included Kate Carroll, whose husband Stephen was shot dead last year by the Continuity IRA. Relatives of Pc Peadar Heffron, who was seriously wounded by a dissident car bomb in January, were also present.

“The dedication, determination and professional attitude displayed by the brave men and women of the PSNI should never be taken for granted,” Mr Woodward said.
