1 dead, thousands stranded in storm

One person died and more than 2,000 others were stranded by mudslides caused by thunderstorms which swept through southern California, authorities said.

San Bernardino County Fire spokesman Chris Prater said a body was found in a car that was swept into a rain-swollen creek in Mount Baldy and overturned.

The storms brought flash floods that led to a few rescues, while thick debris flows cut off access to two mountain towns and stranded more than 2,000 people.

Authorities said those stranded in the San Bernardino Mountains included a group of 500 adults and children at a camping ground. Crews were trying to clear the roads with bulldozers to reach them.

The National Weather Service said the storm dumped up to 4in (10cm) of rain in the mountains east of Los Angeles.
