10 killed in fire at nursing home
A fire has ripped through a nursing home in south eastern South Korea, killing 10 people and leaving 17 others injured.
All of the victims were women in their 70s or older who were sleeping when the fire broke early on Friday on the first floor of a two-story building in the port city of Pohang, police officer Lee In-shik said.
He said 17 people sustained minor injuries and were taken to nearby hospitals for medical treatment.
The fire raged for about 30 minutes before firefighters put it out, he said. Police and fire officials are trying to determine the cause of the blaze.
President Lee Myung-bak expressed regret about the deaths before heading into the venue of the G20 summit in the capital Seoul, according to his spokeswoman Kim Hee-jung.
Pohang, home to South Korean steel-maker Posco, is about 230 miles south east of Seoul.
