A Taliban ambush in northern Afghanistan has killed 14 local security force troops, according to local officials.

Twelve Afghan soldiers and two police officers were killed in the ambush, with another six missing and 13 wounded.

Security forces are still battling Taliban fighters on Monday after the attack.

Taliban insurgents have stepped up attacks against Afghan security forces in a bid to undermine the Western-backed government as most foreign combat troops prepare to withdraw from Afghanistan by the end of the year.
