They couldn't fit 110 candles on Emily Tremonti's birthday cake, but she lit up her OAP home in Fairfield, Connecticut, with a sparkling milestone celebration, surrounded by family and friends .

Great-great-niece Mary-Kate Mele said her Aunt "Em" did not have children but boasts three nieces, six great-nephews and nieces, seven great-great-nieces and three great-great-great nephews and nieces.

Ms Tremonti grew up with four sisters in Mount Vernon, New York. One sister also lived to 100. Their parents were Italian immigrants and Ms Tremonti cherishes her heritage.

She later lived in Bronxville, New York, worked for the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company and married Joseph Tremonti, a Con Edison executive, in 1933.
