Afghan suicide bomb attack kills 45

By Staff Reporter

Afghanistan: A suicide bomber attacked a volleyball tournament yesterday, killing at least 45 people, officials said.

Dozens more were wounded when the bomber, who was on foot and mingling with the crowd, detonated his explosives.

Mokhis Afghan, spokesman for the governor of Paktika province, said the attack happened during an inter-district tournament attended by large crowds in Yahyakhail district.

"There were too many people gathered in the one place to watch the game. Dozens of others are wounded and we have reports that many of them are in critical condition," Mr Afghan said.

He said the crowd was made up mostly of young people, and all the casualties were civilians.

The dead and injured have been taken to a local hospital, he added, but said the governor has requested that helicopters be sent from Kabul to take the most seriously injured for treatment in the capital.

Paktika, bordering Pakistan, is one of Afghanistan's most volatile regions.

The attack came after Afghanistan's parliament approved agreements with the US and Nato allowing troops to remain there next year.
