American tourist mauled to death by lion in South African safari park

A tourist has been killed by a lion at a South African safari park, it has been reported.

The American woman was travelling in a car with another person, apparently with the car windows down.

Local news agency Eyewitness News said the lion jumped through the window and bit the woman, who was in the passenger's seat.

The driver desperately tried to free her from the lion's grasp - sustaining serious injuries - but despite the quick arrival of paramedics, the woman did not survive the attack.

Scott Simpson, from the park, said: "We don’t know exactly what happened, we do know that there was a car driving to the lion camp and the lion did come through the window and it did bite the lady.

"Unfortunately the ambulance arrived quite soon but the lady has passed away.”

Lion Park, in Gauteng, South Africa, advertises on its website "super close-up animal views guaranteed".
