Armed robber hits Chopard jewellery store facing French president's residence

An armed man has robbed the famed Parisian jeweller Chopard, making off with gems worth around a million euros (£720,000).

The robbery took place across the street from the Elysee Palace, which is heavily guarded around the clock. Police said no one was injured.

Paris, with a wealth of fine jewellery stores catering to tourists and locals, is routinely struck by armed robbers, but thefts so close to the presidential palace - in one of the city's wealthiest neighbourhoods - are rare.
