Bachmann joins race for White House
Republican congresswoman Michele Bachmann has formally entered the US presidential race.
Mrs Bachmann, a favourite of the ultraconservative tea party movement, announced that she has filed papers to kick off her bid for the Republican nomination to challenge President Barack Obama next year.
Her comments came in the opening minutes of a televised debate involving her and six other Republican presidential hopefuls.
Mrs Bachmann, who represents a Minnesota constituency in the House of Representatives, has drawn large crowds in Iowa and elsewhere by championing the tea party goals of social conservatism and deep cuts in government spending and regulation.
