Bahrain opens 'police abuse' probe

Bahrain has ordered its public prosecutor to investigate cases involving deaths, torture and inhumane treatment at the hands of police during widespread unrest earlier this year.

The order from the interior minister, Lt Gen Sheik Rashid bin Abdullah Al Khalifa, follows recommendations by a special inquiry commission that urged authorities to probe allegations of mistreatment.

Bahraini authorities say they are also following another of the commission's recommendations by installing cameras to record all interviews of police detainees.

At least 35 people have been killed in violence related to the uprising that began in February, including several members of the security forces.
