Two young boys aged six and seven took two handguns - one of them loaded - to an elementary school in eastern Kentucky, US education officials said today.
Knox County schools spokesman Frank Shelton said a student saw the guns on a school bus and alerted staff at Dewitt Elementary School in Flat Lick.
The boys accused of taking the pistols to school in a backpack are brothers, who are in kindergarten and first grade.
M Shelton said the weapons were confiscated at the school, which was briefly put on lockdown, and no-one was injured.
He said pupils were taking home a letter from the district's superintendent about the incident, which is being investigated by Kentucky State Police.
