British citizen arrested in Iran on security-related charges

Iranian authorities have arrested an Iranian-British citizen over allegations of links to the British intelligence service, according to Iran's state-run news agency.

The IRNA news agency quoted Tehran prosecutor Abbas Jafari Dolatabadi as saying the suspect had "been active in the economic field, related to Iran".

Mr Dolatabadi did not elaborate, saying only that the arrest took place last week. Two other semi-official news agencies also reported the same comments.

The British Embassy in the United Arab Emirates could not be reached for comment.

Since Iran's nuclear deal with world powers last year, Iranian authorities have detained a number of dual nationals visiting the country, accusing them of a variety of security-related charges. Iran does not recognise dual nationalities, meaning those detained cannot receive consular assistance.
