Classy Melania channels Jackie Kennedy's style

By Staff Reporter

First Lady Melania Trump looked cool and elegant at yesterday's inauguration in a sophisticated powder blue outfit designed by leading US fashion house Ralph Lauren.

Commentators immediately spotted similarities between the her sky-blue cashmere jacket and mock turtleneck dress ensemble and the blue Oleg Cassini-designed skirt suit and pillbox hat worn by Jackie Kennedy at her husband John's inauguration in 1961.

Ralph Lauren, the brand that designed so many Hillary Clinton trouser suits, said in a statement yesterday: "It was important to us to uphold and celebrate the tradition of creating iconic American style for this moment."

Wearing long, sky-blue suede gloves and matching stilettos, Mrs Trump was greeted at the White House by Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle, the latter in a deep-red belted short-sleeved dress with black piping and a matching coat.

President Donald Trump, wearing a red tie and black overcoat, left his suit jacket unbuttoned.

Mr Trump's eldest daughter, Ivanka, chose white Oscar de la Renta and wore a tiny American flag pin.

Tiffany Trump wore a white double-breasted coat.

Mr Trump's senior adviser, Kellyanne Conway, wore a Gucci military-style wool coat of red, white and blue, with two rows of cat-head buttons and a red cloche hat.

She described her look as "Trump revolutionary wear".

Others likened it to uniforms worn in The Nutcracker ballet.
