Community authorises coyote cull

Residents have been told to carry sticks on walks in the sprawling Southern California retirement community of Laguna Woods.

A group of coyotes has been attacking leashed pets, killing two dogs in the last week and dragging down their owners who rushed to their rescue.

The Laguna Woods council voted to authorise professional exterminators or animal control experts who obtain permits to shoot the coyotes.

Already the city has tried other tactics to round up the pack of roughly seven animals.

Unlike most coyotes, these animals do not scatter at the sight of humans. But most have eluded capture.
