Delta boss says sorry after systems failure grounds US flights

Delta Air Lines flights across the US are returning to normal after a systems failure led to departure delays and cancellations.

In a statement on the Atlanta-based airline's website at 11.45pm local time, CEO Ed Bastian apologised to customers affected by the "frustrating situation".

Delta said about 150 flights had been cancelled, with more expected.

Mr Bastian says that type of disruption "is not acceptable to the Delta family who prides itself on reliability and customer service".

A waiver has been issued for travel scheduled on January 29 and 30, for re-booking by February 3.

In August, Delta suffered a computer breakdown after a power cut in its operations centre, cancelling more than 2,000 flights over three days.
