Donald Trump's 'let it be an arms race' comment raises nuclear weapons proliferation fears

Donald Trump has called for an "arms race" when asked to clarify his comments about expanding American nuclear weapons capability, MSNBC reported.

And, The president-elect said, America would win any subsequent race.

Trump set alarm bells off on Thursday with a Twitter post that said the United States "must greatly strengthen and expand its nuclear capability until such time as the world comes to its senses regarding nukes."

MSNBC's Mika Brzezinski spoke with Trump on the phone and asked him to expand on his tweet.

Sky News reported her response: "Let it be an arms race. We will outmatch them at every pass and outlast them all."

 

Republican Trump takes office on January 20.

In his year-end news conference in Moscow on Friday, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Trump's nuke tweet was not out of line and that he did not consider the United States to be a potential aggressor.

He also said that his country would not spend money on weapons it could not afford.
