Eco-friendly Germans are refusing in droves to purchase fuel with higher levels of ethanol to meet biofuel targets.
Economy minister Rainer Bruederle has called oil industry and car industry representatives to his ministry for talks on how to ease public fears that the fuel is harmful to their cars and even to the environment, concerns he says are unfounded.
Last month, the government ordered petrol stations to make so-called E10 petrol with 10% ethanol its standard fuel to meet European Union biofuel targets.
But concerned consumers have widely been opting for lower-ethanol, higher-priced super unleaded fuel.
The EU has set a target that by 2020 at least 10% of transport fuel should come from biofuels.
