A plane with 85 passengers has crashed into the Mediterranean Sea shortly after taking off from Beirut International Airport in Lebanon.

The Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737 plane dissapeared from radar after takeoff. Flight ET 409 was bound for Bole Airport in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

A Lebanese official told AP news agency that contact was lost about 45 minutes after the early Monday departure.

Flight 409 had been scheduled to depart from Beirut at 02:10, landing at Addis Ababa at 0750 local time.
