Ex-drummer of rock legends Lynyrd Skynyrd dies in car crash

The former drummer for the Southern hard rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd, Robert Burns Jr, has died in a car crash in the US.

Burns' vehicle went off a corner in a road near Cartersville just before midnight on Friday, hitting a postbox and a tree. Burns was killed in the crash. He was 64.

The single-vehicle accident remains under investigation. Georgia State Patrol officer Tracey Watson said more details were not immediately available.

Burns, was one of five musicians who founded the band in Jacksonville, Florida. While Burns was with the band, they recorded Sweet Home Alabama, Gimme Three Steps, and Free Bird.

He left the band in 1974.
