Fireworks factory blast kills five

An explosion has ripped through a fireworks factory in northern India, killing five workers and injuring 20.

Senior police superintendent Praveen Kumar said the factory owner was among those killed in Saturday's blast on the outskirts of Lucknow city, in the state of Uttar Pradesh.

Some of those injured were in critical condition, including a schoolgirl who was passing by on the street when the explosion occurred.

The small, makeshift factory had been manufacturing fireworks for next month's popular festival of Diwali, an ancient Hindu celebration also known as the "festival of lights".
