Footage has been released from on board a US hurricane hunter jet as it flew through the eye of Hurricane Dorian on Sunday.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) posted a video of its jet flying through the massive storm as it neared the south-eastern United States.

The Category Five storm hit the northern Bahamas with record 185mph winds ripping off roofs, overturning cars and tearing down power lines.

South Carolina governor Henry McMaster ordered a mandatory evacuation of the entire coast of his state, which covers around 830,000 people, on Monday.

Florida governor Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency on Wednesday for 26 Florida counties that could be impacted by Hurricane Dorian.

Authorities in Florida ordered mandatory evacuations in some vulnerable coastal areas from Sunday and Monday.
