Unemployment in France has climbed to 10% in the first quarter of this year - the highest level since the last century.

The jobless total rose by 0.2 percentage points, equalling the 10% mark last hit in the fourth quarter of 1999.

In mainland France, the unemployment rate rose to 9.6% - up 0.3 percentage points, the highest quarter-over-quarter gain in more than two years.

High unemployment and sluggish economic growth in France were seen as important factors behind Socialist Francois Hollande's victory last month over conservative Nicolas Sarkozy, in the French presidential election.
