French tourist killed in hot air balloon accident in Turkey

A French tourist has been killed and at least seven other people injured when a hot air balloon hit a transmission line in Turkey.

The balloon, which was carrying 20 passengers, crashed into the high-voltage line near the popular tourist spot of Cappadocia in the centre of the country.

The seven injured included four Turkish people and three foreigners, said the country's ministry of transport.

The tragedy happened after 81 hot air balloons lifted off on Sunday to give tourists a scenic view of the historic site.

The balloon tours had been suspended on Wednesday due to bad weather but civil aviation authorities gave permission for them to resume on Saturday.

Turkish civil aviation experts are investigating the crash.

The region has seen several recent hot air balloon accidents.

A Danish tourist was killed in February when a balloon made a hard landing, and 49 people were injured in March when three balloons made hard landings amid strong winds.

Cappadocia is a popular tourist destination, known for its volcanic rock formations, underground cities and churches carved into mountainsides.
