Embattled Libyan president Muammar Gaddafi is "prepared to leave", emissaries have told France.

French foreign minister Alain Juppe told France Info radio today that while the contacts do not constitute negotiation, "everyone (involved in Libya's civil war) has contacts with everyone else".

"The Libyan regime sends its messengers all over, to Turkey, to New York, to Paris," Mr Juppe said.

"We receive emissaries who are saying 'Gaddafi is prepared to leave. Let's discuss it'."

Yesterday French foreign ministry officials denied reports that France was negotiating with Gaddafi.

France is part of the Nato-led operation of airstrikes against Gaddafi's forces and has insisted Gaddafi must give up power.
