Gem thief tries to swallow evidence

A Spanish thief who stole a British tourist's £12,000 diamond swallowed it when cornered by police.

An X-ray confirmed it was in the man's stomach after he was taken to a hospital.

The tourist, who has not been named, reported that a handbag with the diamond in it was stolen by two well-dressed men who entered a restaurant in the beach resort of Marbella.

Police later stopped a car with four men with criminal records, and found the bag.

An officer saw one of the men put his hand to his mouth, like he was hiding something.

The man was taken to a medical centre, where the X-ray revealed the diamond in his stomach.
