German minister says Britain would suffer most after Brexit

Germany's finance minister said Britain would be hardest hit if voters choose to leave the European Union in a referendum next month.

Wolfgang Schaeuble said it is impossible to say precisely what would happen in the medium and long term if the Leave camp wins.

But he told reporters in Berlin on Thursday that such a result "would cause immense damage to Europe, possibly also the global economy - but I think the greatest impact will be on the British themselves and that's why the British have to decide".

Mr Schaeuble added that "the world won't end the day after the British referendum. It will keep on turning and we will continue to see, and we will respect the decision."

He added, though, that "in is in and out is out".
