Germany is marking 20 years of reunification

Germany is marking the 20th anniversary of its reunification, celebrating the country's increasing sense of national pride while also stressing the importance of integrating immigrants.

The post-Second World War division ended on October 3, 1990 - less than 11 months after communist East Germany opened the Berlin Wall amid pressure from massive protests.

German president Christian Wulff said at the main anniversary event today that the reunited nation had developed "an uninhibited patriotism, an open commitment to our country".

But he said there was still more to be done despite the achievements since 1990.

Referring to a recent debate over difficulties in integrating immigrants, he insisted that "we must not allow the cementing of prejudice and exclusion".
