Germany's finance minister set to take on role of parliamentary speaker

Germany's finance minister Wolfgang Schaeuble is set to become parliament's new speaker, which would mean he would have to leave his current post, reports said.

Leaders will propose Mr Schaeuble for the new role ahead of parliament's first meeting next month.

The biggest bloc traditionally provides the speaker and the prestigious job is vacant after incumbent Norbert Lammert stepped down.

Mr Schaeuble has been a key figure in eurozone rescue efforts.

Christian Lindner, leader of the Free Democrats, one of two parties with which Chancellor Angelor Merkel will attempt to form a government, offered his support for he move.

He said Mr Schaeuble had "natural authority" that will serve parliament well.
