Google digital library bid boosted

A judge has cleared the way for Google to go forward with plans to create the world's largest digital library.

US federal Judge Denny Chin dismissed a lawsuit brought by the Authors Guild in a ruling issued on Thursday in New York City.

The Authors Guild had sought damages of 750 dollars (£466) for each copyrighted book Google copied. It argued that Google was not making "fair use" of copyright material by offering snippets of works in its online library.

Google has already scanned more than 20 million books for the project.
