Gunman's family offers condolences
The family of the man believed to have gunned down a Virginia Tech university police officer before killing himself have offered condolences and prayers to his family.
In an unsigned statement sent to The Associated Press, the family of 22-year-old Ross Ashley also requested that their privacy be respected, adding that there would be no additional statements.
The Spotsylvania County family has not commented since the shooting on Thursday.
Investigators say Ashley walked up to Deriek Crouse, 39, on the university's Blacksburg campus and shot him dead. Ashley's body was found a short time later, with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Virginia State Police investigators are trying to find a motive for what appeared to be an unprovoked attack.
