Gunmen target cyclist police

Gunmen in Pakistan have opened fire at a group of tribal police escorting a Spanish cyclist, killing six officers and wounding the Spaniard, police said.

The attack took place in the district of Mastung in the impoverished southern Baluchistan province, officials said.

A police spokesman said another nine officers were wounded in the attack.

More than a dozen tribal policemen were escorting the Spanish cyclist who was touring the country. His name was not immediately available. It is customary in Pakistan to have police escorting foreigners.

No one immediately claimed the attack.

Separatists have waged an insurgency in Baluchistan for a greater share of the province's wealth and resources. The province is also believed to be a hiding place for Pakistani militants and the Afghan Taliban.
