High bond for freezer bodies woman

A US woman charged with child abuse after the bodies of two of her children were found in her freezer will stay in jail unless she can post a one million US dollar (£670,000) bond.

Mitchelle Blair, from Detroit, has been arraigned in court on several counts via a video feed from police custody. She did not have a lawyer.

A prosecutor requested a high bond amount, saying Blair could face murder charges once investigators determine how the children died.

She was arrested on Tuesday after court officers serving an eviction notice discovered the bodies.

Prosecutors think her daughter, Stoni Ann Blair, was 13 years old and her son, Stephen Gage Berry, was nine when they died about two years ago.

Blair's two other children have been placed in protective custody.

In setting the high bond, 36th District Court Magistrate Renee McDuffee told Blair "the charges in this matter are so heinous".

She was also ordered not to have any contact with her two surviving children, a 17-year-old girl and 8-year-old boy who had been living in the home.

She also cannot interact with relatives who have contact with those children or with neighbours at her apartment complex.

The 35-year-old had a not guilty plea entered on her behalf.

The children's bodies are still thawing and the medical examiner is planning to conduct post-mortem examinations on them tomorrow.
