Iraq hangs 12 for terror offences
Iraq has hanged 12 prisoners who had been convicted of terrorism-related charges, an official said today.
The Justice Ministry official said all of those executed on Sunday were found guilty of carrying out "terrorist" attacks. He gave no further details of the offences.
Iraq has executed 144 people so far this year, compared with 129 in 2012.
Human rights groups have long criticised trial procedures in Iraqi courts, arguing that some verdicts are based on evidence obtained by torture or forced statements. The government defends the death penalty as a weapon against insurgents bent on destabilising the country.
