Irish man rushed to hospital after stab attack at Portugal tourist resort

Unnamed victim knifed by two men in lively resort of Praia da Rocha near Portimao

An Irishman has been rushed to hospital in Lisbon after being stabbed repeatedly in a popular Algarve tourist resort.

The unnamed victim was knifed after being attacked by two men in the lively resort of Praia da Rocha near Portimao just after 5am on Sunday morning.

He was taken to a nearby hospital before being transferred to Sao Jose Hospital in the Portuguese capital because of the severity of his injuries.

Police are still understood to be hunting the attackers, who are thought to have been involved in an altercation with the victim before the stabbing in a street called Avenida Tomas Cabreira.

The Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed to the Irish Independent that they are aware of the case and are "standing by to provide assistance if requested".

Shocking TV pictures taken at the scene of the crime showed blood stains including bloodied footprints on the cobblestones where the attack happened around 5.20am on Sunday morning, close to a well-known football store called Forca Portugal which was closed at the time.

The investigation into the stabbing is being led by Portugal’s Policia Judiciaria.

The force has made no official comment but is understood to be treating the incident as an attempted homicide.

It has been linked to a previous altercation in a nearby nightspot, although the possibility violent muggers stabbed the victim in an attempt to steal his belongings has not been ruled out.

Praia da Rocha has a reputation for being a loud and brash resort area. It is the beachfront town for the much larger residential city of Portimao less than two miles away.

It is second only to Algarve’s other party resort of Albufeira in terms of tourist numbers. As well as its nightspots including clubs, bars and restaurants, it has a large and beautiful beach.

No-one was immediately available this morning at the hospital in Lisbon.

Sao Jose Hospital is where the British victim of a weekend acid attack in the Algarve resort of Alvor is said to have been taken after suffering second and third degree burns to nearly 60 per cent of her body.
