IS-linked extremists 'behind foiled Philippines attack'

A foiled attack on a central resort island in the Philippines last week would have involved a kidnapping and bombing mission by at least three groups affiliated with Islamic State (IS), security officials said.

The military initially said that government forces, backed by air strikes, successfully detected and thwarted a kidnapping plot by Abu Sayyaf militants on the island province of Bohol, a popular tourist destination far from the militants' southern jungle encampments.

Sources have revealed that three extremist groups which have pledged allegiance to IS had deployed their best bombers and fighters for the Bohol assault.
