Jail term for girl who had abortion after rape slammed
A six-month prison sentence given to a 15-year-old Indonesian girl who had an abortion after being raped by her brother has been strongly criticised.
A district court in Jambi province also sentenced the girl's 18-year-old brother to two years' imprisonment.
Easmus Napitupulu of the Institute for Criminal Justice Reform said the court did not take into account the reason for the abortion.
A spokeswoman for the Embun Pagi Women School in Jambi said the girl's sentence was unfair and violated child protection law.
Abortion is illegal in Indonesia, but is allowed in cases of rape. However, it must take place within one and a half months of becoming pregnant and must be performed by professionals.
The teenage girl had her abortion when she was six months' pregnant.
