Julia Gillard to quit as Australia's Prime Minister after losing leadership ballot to Kevin Rudd

By John Hall

Julia Gillard is to quit as Australian Prime Minister and retire from politics after losing a leadership ballot to her rival Kevin Rudd.

Gillard lost the vote 57-45, giving Rudd a majority of 12,

Supporters of former leader Kevin Rudd begun moves to try to oust Gillard less than three months before scheduled September elections, in a last-ditch move to try to turn around opinion polls showing the party on track for a massive defeat.

Gillard said she would retire from politics if she lost the vote and called on anyone contesting the leadership to do the same.
