Libya opposes aid to Syria rebels

Libya's interim president has said he is against any foreign intervention in Syria or the arming of the opposition.

Mohammed al-Megarif, the head of Libya's parliament, spoke at a press conference with Tunisian President Moncef Marzouki, laying out their joint positions on Syria against foreign interference.

Both called for Syrian President Bashar Assad to step down.

Mr al-Megarif said they were withholding recognition of the new Syrian opposition coalition until they could evaluate how representative it was.

The rebels that overthrew Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi last year were backed by Nato air strikes as well as supplied with sophisticated weapons from friendly countries.

The uprising in Syria, however, has not received similar international support.
