A lumberjack trapped deep in an isolated forest freed himself by cutting off all the toes on his right foot with a penknife

Jon Hutt, 61, was pinned by a logging machine and said he was afraid it would take hours to find him and he might die.

He used a three-inch knife to sever his toes from the machinery about 30 minutes after realising no one heard his cries for help.

Mr Hutt said he was trying to retrieve a pile of fallen Aspen trees to cut up for winter firewood near Montrose in Colorado when a logging trailer slipped and pinned his foot.

He drove to a car park where an ambulance arrived to take him to hospital.
