Minister to meet Hague over Assange

Ecuador's foreign minister says he will meet William Hague on June 17 to discuss the unresolved asylum case of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.

Mr Assange will by then be completing a year of living in cramped quarters in Ecuador's London embassy.

Foreign minister Ricardo Patino announced the meeting with Mr Hague via Twitter and said he hoped to sketch out a resolution.

Mr Assange took refuge in the embassy to avoid extradition to Sweden to face questioning for alleged sexual misconduct. Britain has refused to grant him safe passage.

Ecuador says Mr Assange faces a real threat of political persecution from America for publishing a trove of secret US documents.

The US soldier who admitted leaking the documents, Bradley Manning, went on trial yesterday outside Washington.
