Muhammad Ali's personal photographer Howard Bingham dies at 77

Howard Bingham, the long-time personal photographer and close friend of Muhammad Ali, has died aged 77.

Bingham's agent, Harlan Werner, told The Associated Press that Bingham died on Thursday. No cause of death was given.

Bingham was a photographer for the small African-American newspaper Los Angeles Sentinel in 1962 when he was assigned to cover a fight by an up-and-coming young boxer named Cassius Clay.

The pair hit it off immediately, with Bingham inviting the future heavyweight champion to his mother's house for dinner after the fight.

Over the next half century Bingham would take literally hundreds of thousands of photos of Ali, including many of sport's most iconic.

He also photographed world leaders, movie stars, political conventions and other breaking news during his own long and distinguished career.
