One killed in Swiss building blast

One person died and 14 were injured after an explosion at an apartment block in the western Swiss city of Yverdon-les-Bains.

A police spokesman said the blast happened at around lunchtime on Tuesday on the fourth floor of a residential building in the centre of the city.

The spokesman, Jean-Christophe Sauterel, said police were still trying to determine the cause of the explosion.

Amateur footage taken from the scene, about 37 miles west of the capital Bern, showed a blackened hole in the side of the building and passers-by stepping over debris that was strewn across the street.

Mr Sauterel said eight of the injured were being treated in hospital.
