Passengers safe after bird strike

A plane headed for London has returned to the Orlando-Sanford International Airport after it hit a bird during take-off.

Airport vice president Diane Crews said the Thomson Airways flight turned around after the pilot heard and felt the large bird strike.

The Boeing 767 landed safely, and no injuries were reported to the 269 people on board.

Crews said the passengers will spend the night at a hotel and take a different plane to London Gatwick Airport later.

The bird's carcass was retrieved from an engine on the left side of the plane. The animal will be sent to the Smithsonian Institution, where experts will identify the species.
