Petraeus sentenced for secrets leak

Former CIA director David Petraeus is being sentenced in a US federal court for sharing military secrets with his biographer, with whom he was having an affair.

Today's hearing in Charlotte, North Carolina, comes two months after Petraeus agreed to plead guilty to a misdemeanour count of unauthorised removal and retention of classified material.

The deal carries a possible sentence of up to a year in prison. In court papers, prosecutors recommended two years of probation and a 40,000 US dollar (£26,700) fine.

However, the judge is not bound by that and could still impose a prison sentence.

The affair ruined the reputation of the retired four-star Army general who led US forces in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The agreement was filed in Charlotte, where Paula Broadwell, the general's biographer and former lover, lives with her husband.
