'Popeye' defends his 31-inch arms

An Egyptian body builder has defended his record-breaking biceps after critics accused him of using steroids or injecting his arms with synthetic substances.

Moustafa Ismail, who lives in Massachusetts in the US, consumes seven pounds of protein, nine pounds of carbohydrates and 11 litres of water each day to help maintain upper arms that measure 31 inches around - as big as a small man's waist.

Guinness World Records had planned to include him in its 2013 edition but has now backed off and is doing a review.

Mr Ismail can lift as much as 600 pounds. He says that his biceps and triceps are all-natural and that as a gas station attendant, he could not afford artificial enhancements anyway.
