A small plane crashed beside a supermarket near Lisbon yesterday, killing four people on board the aircraft and one on the ground.

Four people in the supermarket also suffered minor injuries in the crash in the Portuguese capital, emergency services said.

Those killed included the Swiss pilot, three French passengers on the plane and a Portuguese truck driver, who was emptying his cargo at the back of the supermarket when the crash occurred and set his vehicle on fire.

The Swiss-registered plane crashed shortly after a noon take-off from the small Tires airfield, 12 miles west of Lisbon, emergency services operational commander Miguel Cruz said.

Officials said that the crash happened amid clear skies and a light wind.
