Renegade warlord Coulibaly killed

The renegade warlord who began the pro-democracy battle for Abidjan has been killed by his one-time allies turned enemy, according to Ivory Coast state television.

It said self-styled General Ibrahim "IB" Coulibaly died during fighting between forces of defence minister Guillaume Soro and his "Invisible Commandos" in Coulibaly's stronghold in Abidjan's poor neighbourhood of Abobo.

A commander of Soro's fighters said they found Coulibaly's body when they seized his headquarters.

Coulibaly in February began fighting the troops of fallen strongman Laurent Gbagbo after they fired mortar shells and rockets into Abobo.

President Alassane Ouattara had ordered him forcibly disarmed after Coulibaly failed to surrender his weapons following Gbagbo's April 11 arrest.
