Republican flag removed from former PSNI base

By Brett Campbell

The removal of a republican flag which sparked outrage when it was erected over a former police station in Co Londonderry last week has been welcomed.

The Starry Plough which is associated with the Irish Republican Socialist Party - the political wing of the INLA - appeared on a communications mast inside the grounds of the former PSNI base in Maghera.

Police have confirmed that they were responsible for the removal of the flag, a move that has been welcomed by Mid Ulster DUP MLA Keith Buchanan.

"I was happy to see it taken down because it has no place in the local community or in wider society and especially has no place in a former police station," he said, adding the security breach was an "embarrassment".

The building on Coleraine Road hasn't been used by police since 2013 but is still owned by the Policing Board.
