Spain evacuates Libya embassy staff

Spain's Foreign Ministry says it is temporarily evacuating its ambassador and most embassy staff from Libya because of the worsening security situation in Tripoli.

A ministry statement said one staff member would remain in charge of the embassy. It added that an unspecified number of Spaniards and other nationals were also to be flown out.

On Tuesday, a Spanish military plane took 60 people out of Libya, among them 49 Spaniards and some relatives.

The ministry said it was confident that the unstable situation in Libya would end soon. It reiterated Spain's support for the country's new parliament and called again for a ceasefire as soon as possible.
