Toulouse Jewish school killer may have filmed shootings

A gunman who killed four people at a Jewish school in southern France may have filmed the attack, the French interior minister said today.

Claude Gueant said the attacker "was wearing on his bloody chest a kind of filming apparatus".

Asked whether the gunman recorded the scene, he responded: "We can imagine that."

He said officials are combing the internet to see if the killer posted a video online, but have not yet found any traces.

Mr Gueant was speaking in the city of Toulouse, where an unidentified assailant opened fire at a Jewish school yesterday, killing a rabbi and his two sons along with the daughter of the school principal.

Authorities say the same weapon was used in killings of three French paratroopers last week.

The motive for the killings is unclear.

Schools around France are holding a moment of silence today in memory of the victims of the shootings.

President Nicolas Sarkozy is meeting members of France's Jewish and Muslim community - France has the largest population of Jews and Muslims in Western Europe.

The paratroopers targeted last week, also in the Toulouse region, were of North African and French Caribbean descent, and concerns are growing of a suspected racist and anti-Semitic serial killer.

In all three attacks, the assailant fled on a motorbike.

The shootings echoed across a nation that has been focused on an upcoming presidential race in which issues about religious minorities and race have gained prominence.

Mr Sarkozy - who has struck a nationalist line in his campaigning - raised the terrorism alert level in the region to its highest level, while also noting a possible racist motive.
